Catch that Overcomer spirit!
One cannot spend much time with the students of City Baptist School without noticing their spirit. It is man- ifested by their smiles in the hallways and classrooms, by their spontaneous singing on bus trips to school, by their unselfish attitude toward their class- mates, by their warm welcomes to guests, by their love of the Best Years members, and so on. We know this spirit is a reflection of God's love which our students have allowed to flow through their lives. May it ever be so!

The 1996 OVERCOMER is dedicated to
Mr. Geoff Dana
O ne small pebble thrown into a body of water causes a ripple effect covering great distances. One bus, driven by a dedicated driver, can cause an eternal ripple of effect in the lives of the young riders on that bus. Add to this driver a heart of love and godly dedication, and then you will find Bro. Geoff Dana, a City Baptist bus driver who has given his life to minister to the indi- vidual lives of our students.
Born in Bangkok. Thailand, to parents working in government positions, Mr. Geoff Dana has lived in several foreign countries. At the age of fourteen, Mr. Dana moved to Vienna, Virginia. In 1985. Mr. Dana was given a tract from a Hyles-Anderson Col- lege graduate. Mr. Dana read the tract and accepted Christ as his personal Savior.
Through the influence of a friend, Mr. Dana began attending church regularly. It was through the influence of the assistant pastor that Mr. Dana learned of Dr. Jack Hyles and Hyles-Anderson College. Mr. Dana moved to the Hammond area in 1 988 and began driving a bus for City Baptist Schools. Mr. Dana has given a new defini- tion to the occupation of bus driver.
Through consistent hard work, prayer, and generosity, Mr. Dana has thrown out his pebble of influence and touched the lives of many students. Only Heaven will reveal the effect of the man we call "Bro. Geoff." With a bus as his throne, miles as his challenge, and students as his life, we are honored to dedicate our 1996 Over- comer to Mr. Geoff Dana.

It has been my privilege for the past nine years to know Geoff Dana as a fellow employee and as a friend. Brother Hyles has taught us that true friends come from God. When Mr. Dana came to City Baptist, he cer- tainly was sent here by God.
For nine years Mr. Dana has risen at 3 o'clock each morning to get his bus ready to pick up City Baptist students. He contines to do it year after year. His greatness will not be fully recog- nized until we get to Heaven.
Mr. Dana has made a difference in the lives of many "bus kids." His love for them is very evident. I'm so happy that the 1996 Overcomer is dedicated to a very deserving Geoff Dana.

Godly Compassion
Dr. Jack F. Hyles was bom in Texas, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willis Athey Hyles. While he was a child our country suffered the Great Depression, which placed many hardships on the Hyles’ family.
Dr. Hyles felt God’s hand on his life while still a boy, and he began preaching by the age of 19. He has pastored the First Baptist Church of Hammond, the world’s largest Sunday school, for nearly 37 years. During his tenure here, he has never forgotten the hardships of his childhood; but rather, he has given his life to lift the load of others in need. City Baptist School is a result of this godly compassion.

A Closer Look...
To the casual observer, the grade school might seem like just a bunch of young children. But to the one who takes a closer look, it will be noted that here are some clean-cut, excitable people who really want to please the Lord with their lives. They are just embarking upon a long journey, but a good start is vital for a truly successful journey. We at City Baptist are trying to give our children this good start; to teach them from the beginning the importance of living a clean, godly life. Let’s take a closer look at these important individuals whom we call the City Baptist Eagles.

Led by Mr. Lewis, boys in this group learn patriotism, disci- pline, and how to treat our flag with respect. They perform at many school functions.
Heartstrings
Girls who join are taught to do something they've never done before. They make several crafts which they then give away to others.

This is a group for junior highers with musical talent. Members have the opportu- nity to sing in chapel and at school functions.
Melodies of Praise For high school ladies only, the Melodies of Praise sing in chapel, at banquets, and at school functions.

The first year of grade school intramural sports was a smashing success. The excite- ment of the students was running high at each game.

Our cheerleaders reflect the spirit of their sponsor. Miss Hibbard. They are helpful and encouraging. They are busy with cheering on their teams, decorating their lockers, and bringing enthusiam to the games. However, they also cheer at school functions and are willing to pitch in and help with whatever task Miss Hibbard sets before them. They are a definite asset and a joy to be around. Dr. Jack Schaap, Assistant to the President of Hyles- Anderson College, has had a profound influence on the lives of our students. Our Jog-A-Thon is a voluntary fund-raiser to support our intra- mural sports program. Students line up people tosponsorthemas they jog three to five miles. All students who reach a certain level of support are rewarded with a trip to Shakey’s Smorgas- bord during school. The Jog-A- Thon itself is at a lovely park where students enjoy good food and time with their classmates and teachers.

Mountains Higher in '95
l \ ith a mountain-climbing theme, this year’s candy sale was a huge success as students worked hard selling candy to earn trips. Some of the special trips included Deep River Park, dry mountain *-< sledding, a hayride/hot dog roast, Brookfield Zoo, bowling, Mt. Baldy Sand Dunes, down-river canoeing, and Starved Rock State Park. The top six students enjoyed a four-day trip to the Smoky Mountains in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

5 out of 10 grades voted the Walk-A-Thon their favorite activity
of the year, Students voluntarily partici- pate by signing up sponsors to support them for walking the three to five miles. The proceeds go to help with the expenses of the senior trip.

For one week of every school year, the hallways and class- rooms of City Baptist take on the appearance of a laboratory as students put up their Science Fair projects and displays. Colorful posterboards, test tubes, plants, etc., cover walls and tables. Judges evaluate the projects, and three winners are chosen from each class. Each receives a beautiful trophy.
